Kathleen Ann Moore Carter died in McKinleyville, California on August 26th, 2023 of ALS after a short illness. She was born on April 22, 1948, in Boulder, Colorado to Oral and Kathryn Moore, the first of their 4 children.
The family soon moved to San Francisco and then to a dam construction project, part of the Hetch Hetchy Water system. She spent from age 5 to 9 there, attending a one-room school and making lifelong friends with other children in the camp. The family moved back to San Francisco and Kathleen spent the rest of her secondary school years there. The family spent their summers in the Sierras, where she met and married Raul Carter. Raul and Kathleen lived in San Francisco and had 2 children, Christopher (Chris) and Kathryn (Katy). Raul and Kathleen divorced but continued to co-parent their children in San Francisco until the mid-1970s when Kathleen purchased a home in Inverness Park.
Having received her AA in Horticulture from San Francisco City College, Kathleen worked at various nurseries in Fairfax and San Rafael, as well as waitressing at the Olema Inn and the Marshall Tavern, while she raised her family. When her daughter graduated high school, she applied to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then completed her Bachelor's Degree in Ornamental Horticulture, taking additional courses in Permaculture, and helping to start a Community Garden in Pt. Reyes, and making dear friends.
She continued to work in the field of Horticulture for Redwood Landscaping, Blooms, and Annie's Annuals, then opened her own Horticulture and Landscape Design business. She created amazing gardens in Marin and later her own private garden in Mckinleyville, where she moved in 2009.
Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, Oral and Kathryn Bush Moore. She is survived by her children Chris Carter (Kristi) of Truckee, and Katy Martin (Scott) of Redding, and six grandchildren, Jessica Martin, Tyler Carter (Caitlin), Danielle Carter Dayton (James), Nicole Martin, Parker Martin, and Brooke Carter, and 3 Great Granddaughters, Brooklyn Lyman, Addison Dayton, and Penelope Carter.
She is also survived by her 3 siblings James Moore (Patricia), Joann Moore (Ray Manley), and Marjie Moore Bibeau, dear friend and companion Alan Dodd, and many, many close friends.
A memorial service is planned for Thursday, October 19th, 2023 from 1-4 at The Marin Art & Garden Center, Ross, California.
The family asks that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy and Doctors Without Borders.
